The Promises and Perils of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Presented by
Robert W. Evans, Ph.D., Ph.D., Director, Veritas Institute for the Study of Bioethics and Public Values
The ability of stem cells to diversify into nearly every cell and tissue in the human body has transfixed the imagination of not only the medical and scientific communities, but
also of the news media and popular culture. The promised possibilities and medical miracles are truly astonishing. However, there are numerous ethical challenges that readily attach to this
activity, not least of which is the nagging question concerning the moral status of the material involved. As such, human embryonic stem cell research is proving to be one of the most pressing
issues facing societies around the globe today. The purpose of this presentation is to examine the promises and perils of human embryonic stem cell research, and to offer an informed and
sensitive response to the same from the vantage point of Christian conviction. Specific attention will be given to the underlying ethical issues involved, including the moral status of the
human embryo and the question of what it means to be human. A discussion will follow the lecture. This meeting welcomes all conference attendees of the Society for Neuroscience, as well as the
public. To receive e-mail updates, enter your email address in the Christian
